There are storms of the earth and storms of the soul. The awesome destructive power of a tornado, with its erratic power and unpredictability, is sometimes mirrored in the tempests of our lives. There are many types of distress that slowly chip away at (or suddenly devastate) our sense of well-being. The possibilities are as varied as the human mind. Many things alter mental health into mental hell.
Medical and mental health professionals have clinical jargon such as bipolar or neurotrans- mitters to define many conditions people go through. Even so, a tornado is a clear image of a person in crisis, especially with the chaos and emptiness after.
Professionals can help one weather the storm and make sense of life after a crisis. But encouragement from family and friends is also essential and speeds recovery. Peer support groups, education in recovery strategies, social interaction and spiritual support help one transition to mental health.
Wayne Holmes Mental Health Coalition is made up of individuals both who have gone through the storms of the soul as well as friends and family who stood by and helped another amid a squall.
